What is your educational background?
I have a BA (Cum Laude) in Education from Cleveland State University, Associate of Applied Science in Early Childhood Education and an Associate of Arts Degree from Cuyahoga Community College. I am a Certified CLASS Observer for Pre-K and a Cooperating Teacher for Cuyahoga Community College Student Teachers. I have 25 plus years of classroom experience.
What is your favorite thing about what you do?
I enjoy working with the public & empowering people. Working at the center level at Head Start gives me the opportunity to meet a diverse population of families with their own unique situations and needs. What I enjoy the most is the daily conversations, the hugs and smiles of the kids, meeting each family and knowing their personal goals for growth and documenting their progress toward success.
What inspires you to do your job?
I am a former Head Start parent and I know firsthand how the first five years of a child’s development can affect their future learning potential. Head Start supported not only my child but the whole family. When applicable, I share my personal experiences with other parents to let them know how Head Start made a positive impact on my entire family’s future by providing not only excellent educational staff but additional outside services.
My son is now a sophomore biochemistry major who attended King Kennedy Head Start for two years. I credit some of his success to his head start teacher, who retired this year from our agency. She allowed him to explore with blocks, scissors, glue, play dough, silly putty, sand, water, snow, paint, soil, and provided numerous cooking experiences that increased his curiosity to its full potential. When at the time, I preferred that he stay neat and clean and concentrated on reading, writing, and math work books at the table.
Ms. Still gave him hands-on outlets of learning that I did not.
My job gives me the opportunity to share what I have experience over the last twenty-five years in education with others and share my knowledge of what Head Start can do to enhance the lives of families that we serve.
