CEOGC News: CEOGC Offers Summer Cooling Program to Cuyahoga County Residents

The Council for Economic Opportunities in Greater Cleveland (CEOGC) will begin accepting Summer Cooling Program applications at its Housing Services Office at 1849 Prospect Avenue on July 1st, 2010.

 

Eligible households with a member who is sixty (60) years of age or older or has a household member who has an illness that would benefit from assistance can receive assistance with a current electric bill.  No physician’s documentation in needed for households with a member sixty (60) years or older.  The maximum benefit for electric energy assistance will be $175. 

 

An eligible household has income that is at or below 200% of the federal poverty income guidelines for their household size.  For a household of one, the income eligibility standard is $21,660, a household of two, $29,140, a household of three, $36,620, and a household of four, $44,100.  Documentation of income and social security numbers for all household members will be necessary to apply for assistance, and applicants must have their current energy bills.   Air conditioning units will be distributed to eligible households.  The window air conditioners will be distributed on a first come, first serve basis. 

 

“These services are critical to the elderly and to those with serious illnesses is our community,” says Evelyn Rice, Vice President of Community Services for CEOGC. “In many cases, they can actually save a life.”

 

The CEOGC Housing Services Office will accept 25 walk-in applicants each day.  HEAP Office hours are Monday through Friday from 8:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m.  The office will give priority attention to households with members who are 60 years of age or older.  To request an appointment, county residents must call (216) 518-4014.   The appointment line is accessible 24 hours each day, 7 days a week.   The final day to apply for summer cooling assistance is August 31st, 2010.
