Deborah Southerington

Vice President of Human Resources

Deborah Southerington is the Vice President of Human Resources at the Council for Economic Opportunities. She is responsible for assessing HR operations to align with organizational goals and creating a more strategic, efficient and effective HR department.

Before joining the team at the Council, Southerington worked as the Director of Human Resources for the City of Cleveland. There, she was responsible for the day-to-day management of the HR Department with oversight of employee benefits/wellness, labor/employee relations, unemployment compensation, training and employee development, HRIS and personnel administration; all while delivering effective and efficient services to City employees and the public.

Southerington also previously served Cuyahoga County for twelve years in the Office of Human Resources.  She began her career at the County as a Personnel Administrator and progressed to the Interim Director.

Southerington earned her bachelor’s degree from Kent State University and is a graduate of the 2002 Leadership Academy at Cleveland State University and the LeadDIVERSITY class of 2009.  She is a member of SHRM at the local and national level. She is married and has two children.
