The last Monday in the month of July is always busy, but a very fun day here at the Council for Economic Opportunities in Greater Cleveland. The Council partners with Radio One and the Cleveland Metroparks Zoo to host “Family Day at the Zoo.” The event garners a large amount of excitement and attendance due to the many giveaways, dance contest, local DJ appearances and a number of free resources. For CEOGC, it provides a huge opportunity to spread awareness about the agency and increase Head Start enrollment before the start of the 2019-20 school year, which begins August 13.

“This event really gave us another platform to spread our mission and inform people of our program,” said Shawn Holden, Collaborative Manager for Head Start. “I discovered that there are many people who are still unaware of the services we provide–we were able to help change that just by being a sponsor at Day at the Zoo.”

Despite 80+ degree weather under the sun, families poured into the zoo and were met immediately by Head Start’s Family Service Workers (FSW’s), eager to share information about our early childhood education programs. More than 20 FSW’s dressed in yellow CEOGC t-shirts, did their best to talk to every interested person about Early Head Start, Head Start and all of CEOGC’s programs. The results? More than 140 families completed mini-applications.

“The teamwork we exhibited was downright phenomenal,” said Holden. “Everyone played their part and did so in the heat without complaint. I was very proud of our team. Now it’s time to follow up with the families and get them enrolled.”
